MC-80a's are an older version of the MC-80b's. They were designed without the usual Mon Calamarian shield strength which kept the shields recharging during battle. Not quite as large as Imperator-Class Star Destroyers, the MC-80a's did not show much success going up against those ships. Rather they were useful in targeting smaller Imperial craft such as VSD's and Interdictor Cruisers.
